Samson |
 |
Delilah|
| Yes, we now have 2 peacocks. Samson and Delilah. Samson came first. He entered our Carmel through the back gate one fine morning and made his home amongst the blueberries. He hollered his head off until finally, a few days later, Delilah made her way to the vegetable garden. They've been happily living in our enclosure ever since.
Delilah is a real lady, who loves the rose garden. She has been seen lying in the midst of the flowers, bathing herself, or grazing in the weeds hoping to eat the seeds that the chipmunks so imprudently planted. Occasionally they wander to the backyard to join us for recreation and eat Sister John Marie's flowers. Sometimes we find them perched on the infirmary porch, visiting with Sister Veronica. Yes, even peacocks know how to perform works of mercy! The first time Samson went for a visit, he squawked so loud that Sister Veronica, not knowing he was there, nearly dropped her water! He gives out a funny "Hee-HONK!" before his "EEE-AAAAAWH, EEE-AAAAAWH," that could even frighten the pants off a cougar if they weren't expecting it. But loud squawks aside, we love them, and couldn't be more pleased that they've joined us. Our good Lord knows exactly what we need, and always keeps us well entertained. |

FLOS CARMELI UPDATE:
 |
(Flos Carmeli poses with Sleeping St. Joseph) |
 |
|
On June 26th, our Flos Carmeli group (for young girls and women interested in religious life) spent the day at our Carmel. Sister Juana Maria taught them how to "dream with St. Joseph," and they gave their prayer intentions to our sleeping St. Joseph statue, in the hopes that while he dreams, he will pray for their intentions. Next, the sisters met with the Flos Carmeli group for recreation, answering any questions they may have about religious life. They had lunch together and then met with Sister Agatha in the afternoon to study scripture. This time, they looked at the call of the prophet Jeremiah. At the end of their visit, they learned how to make knotted rosaries. Also, throughout the day, they prayed the Divine Office with the sisters, ending with Vespers and the sung Solemn Salve, giving them an idea of what the contemplative vocation--a life dedicated to prayer and sacrifice in the heart of the church--is like. It was a beautiful day, and we are looking forward to their next visit in two months.
We are keeping all of you in our prayers, and hope you are staying cool in all this hot weather. May the good Lord shower an abundance of blessings on you and keep you in His Sacred Heart.
In Christ's peace and love,
Your Sisters in Eugene Carmel
